About Mr. Garfinkle

Marc Garfinkle - Civil Lawyer
Marc Garfinkle was born in Newark, NJ in 1952. He was graduated from Marietta College in Ohio, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his J.D. at Hastings College of the Law (Univ. of Cal.) in San Francisco, where he began his career as a trial lawyer in 1978. He has been a solo practitioner for virtually his entire career, emphasizing plaintiff’s personal injury litigation and criminal defense.

Mr. Garfinkle is Adjunct Professor of Persuasion and Advocacy at Seton Hall University School of Law.  He is former investigator and chair of the N.J. Supreme Court District Attorney Ethics Committee for Dist VB, and is the Public Defender for the Township of Livingston.  He has been a panelist for the NJ State Bar Association’s Institute for Continuing Legal Education on the subject of juvenile court and has been chosen to the teaching faculty of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy.  Mr. Garfinkle appears frequently on television and radio in connection with legal topics, and has hosted numerous television and radios shows in French and Haitian Creole, addressing legal issues that confront immigrant communities.

In addition to practicing law, Mr. Garfinkle has written the popular "Hip-Pocket Guide to Testifying in Court", and the new "Lawyer's Hip-Pocket Guide to Appearing in Court".  On behalf of state and local bar associations, he lectures to audiences, particularly young audiences, on issues such as the juvenile justice system, sexual harassment, delinquency and gangs. He is annually a judge at Seton Hall University Law School’s John J. Gibbons Criminal Moot Court Competition, and the NJ state finals of the Knights of Pythias annual public speaking contest.

Court House NJ Mr. Garfinkle is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the American Association for Justice (formerly American Trial Lawyers’ Association).
