Traffic Court in New Jersey
The municipal courts are New Jersey’s traffic courts. Some municipalities hear traffic and criminal matters on the same day; others hold separate sessions for each. Sitting as traffic court, the municipal court assesses fines and penalties, sentences offenders to jail (up to six months), imposes periods of license suspension or ineligibility, and orders payments of surcharges. In addition, the traffic court judge, can order “driving school,” ignition interlock systems, substance abuse treatment, and jail in appropriate cases.
Motor vehicle points are assessed by the Motor Vehicle Commission in Trenton, following the entry of a conviction or guilty plea to many moving violations. The imposition of points can result in the suspension of one’s driver’s license and the application of a policy surcharge by his/her automobile insurance carrier.
