Disorderly Persons Offenses

Disorderly Persons and Petty Disorderly Persons Offenses in New Jersey

The spectrum of criminal offenses in New Jersey is broad, and the offenses are classified according to the penalties that may apply. Disorderly persons offenses and petty disorderly persons offenses are lower-level offenses that don’t necessarily mean that you will go to jail. Disorderly persons offenses should not be confused with municipal ordinances called “disorderly persons.”

Some DPOs and PDPOs are heard in Superior Court, often along with other, more serious criminal charges. Sometimes they are remanded or downgraded to the municipal court. In either case, an experienced lawyer can help.
